Shift Register

Shift registers are a single byte (8 bits) of memory. You can use them to multiply your inputs and outputs. How? Great tutorials on the arduino site for shifting out as well as shifting in. Long story short, if you have a parallel in, serial out shift register you can get 8 input using only 3 pins. Vice Versa if you have a serial in, parallel out shift register. The power can be multiplied by daisy-chaining a bunch of shift registers together.
